This can be done either by yourself or by those who you purchase the wood from. If already seasoned, they’ll usually be labelled as so, such as being called ‘kiln dried’. Why Should I Dry My Logs? 

As we’ve mentioned in our other guides already, the moisture content of your logs must be reduced down to 25-20% before burning. Before being dried, it’s likely that the moisture content will be sitting at around 45-30%. If burnt at this level, it would let out much more smoke which would cause serious damage to your log burner and its surroundings. Not only that, but by burning moist wood, most of the energy from the fire will be used to rid the moisture making it harder to maintain the desired heat levels. 

Therefore, by burning the wood once dry, you’ll be able to burn a much more efficient fire without any concerns about its safety too.

How Can I Dry My Own Logs? 

First of all, there are a couple of things to consider before starting. Your first consideration should be whether you have the right amount of space available. In order to dry your logs, you will most likely need to either do this outside or in a shed with adequate ventilation. Secondly, you must consider whether you have the time. If left as they are, it can take up to two years to get them down to the right moisture level. However, this can be cut shorter by chopping the wood beforehand. Although this may not be a quick process to begin with, once you enter into a cycle, you should always have wood ready to burn. 

As we have just mentioned, a good starting point is to ensure that the logs are chopped according to how you would like. Then, you must find somewhere where they can be protected from rainfall. In order to ensure that the wind can still do its job of drying it, the sides of the stack should be left open. If you have instead opted for a shed, slatted sides should be able to let the air through. In order to check whether they have been seasoned well enough, you can inspect the ends of the logs. If they are darker and cracked, they should be dry. If you have wood to make a comparison, you should also find that the dry wood is lighter than its wet counterpart.
