Using Railway Sleepers In Your Garden

Railway sleepers are a great way to add a rustic texture to your garden. They can be used in many ways and can suit most gardens or driveways. So how will you be showcasing yours?

Raised Flowerbeds

Raised flowerbeds are a great way of adding some height to your garden. Many border plants are quite low lying, with the occasional one shooting higher. Creating your own raised flower bed from railway sleepers can help you boost the height, and maybe even enjoy the beautiful colours and scents a little more.

You can simply stack the sleepers at the front of your border (we highly recommend fixing them together to increase structural integrity) and backfill with soil and compost. Remember, the higher you want your bed to be, it may be worth filing a good section with hardcore. This will help with drainage during the wet season.

Rustic Seating

If you are feeling a little bit crafty, you can easily turn a couple of hefty railway sleepers into a good, strong, rustic bench.

Many modern garden benches are made of fairly thin wood, which bows over time and eventually snaps underweight. However, providing you are attaching your pieces of sleeper together with adequate fixtures, they will provide a stable seat for many years to come. Remember, if you plan to use your sleepers as a seat, you may need to treat them regularly to maintain their condition.

Border Edging

Raised flowerbeds might not be your preference, but that doesn't mean that you cant use them to create a ground-level border. Edging your border with these solid sleepers can help you to keep kids, pets and even the adults out of your borders while you're trying to grow them. You can have them resting in place on the ground (they are heavy enough that it would take serious force to knock them into your plants) or you can bed them in a couple of inches for extra stability.

The edging also works great at the edge of a patio, decking or dividing the garden between areas, such as lawn and gravel.
