Gravel For Increased Drainage

For the keen gardeners amongst us, we know that gravel is used in a variety of ways in our gardens. With the most common not actually being for decorative purposes, but rather for drainage.

Lawn Drainage

Here in Stoke on Trent, many of us have clay-heavy soil in our gardens. And as we know, it means that the soil compacts, and limits drainage. This means that where we have lawns laid directly onto clay-rich we tend to find that they do not drain and can become quite boggy.

If you have children and pets or spend time in the garden even after it has rained, you will appreciate that this can sometimes be an issue.

To help with lawn drainage, unfortunately, it means digging up your lawn and starting again. Investing in a layer of gravel under your lawn can help with water draining away. Limestone works great under your lawn, or a smaller layer of MOT 1 can help.

Include some topsoil in your order to give your lawn the best nutrients that you possibly can.

Driveway Drainage

Many of us are investing in tarmac or printed concrete driveways, not only for practicality but also aesthetics, we find that we have drainage issues. This, of course, is due to the solid, impermeable surface.

Many professionals will advise that drains are installed at the lowest points of the driveway - typically at least along one side of the drive. However, these drains aren't always attractive and can hinder the appearance of your new driveway.

Instead, when having those drains installed, request that they are a little deeper, and cover the top in a layer of attractive decorative stone. We love the plum slate for this, but any of our decorative gravels will look great against your new driveway, simply pick one to suit.

Gravel Driveways

Of course, another option to battle drainage issues on your driveway is to invest in a gravel drive. This means that there will be no water pooling on the driveway, allowing you to walk or drive across it without issues. Plus our decorative gravel looks great as a gravel drive!
